Sgt. Douglas J. Riney's Story

Sgt. Douglas J. Riney was Killed in Action on 10/19/2016 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas and was assigned to the Regimental Support Squadron in 2012 as a Petroleum Supply Specialist and was on his second tour in Afghanistan in 2016 at the time of his passing. Douglas’s awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, and the NATO Medal. Douglas leaves behind a wife (Kylie) and 2 wonderful children, Elea (10) who turned 4 the day after her dad was killed and James (9) who was only 2 at the time. They were his pride and joy. Doug graduated from Spoon River Valley High School in 2008 and then from Spoon River College in 2011. He was a part of his community’s volunteer Fire Department until he joined the Army in 2012. Doug loved riding his motorcycle and playing Corn Hole with his family and friends. He was big into riding BMX bike riding. His favorite sports teams were the  Green Bay Packers and the St. Louis Cardinals.
