Kim and Ken Vanderpool's Story

I joined the Army in Jan. 1981. I took basic training and AIT at Ft. McClellan, Alabama to become a 95B (Military Police). Following my training my wife and I got married and a week later I went to my first duty station in Seoul Korea at the 142 Military Police Company. A year later I was stationed with the 519th MP Battalion at Ft. Meade Maryland. After serving there for 2 years I was stationed in Aschaffenburg, Germany in 1984 with the 3rd Infantry Division. During my 6 years of active duty I attained the rank of Sergeant was a patrolman, patrol supervisor, Platoon NBC NCO and a Military Police Desk Sergeant. I also participated in joint military exercises REFORGER. Besides security duty of our installations we maintained combat readiness during the Cold War to protect U.S. interests in Germany specifically near the Czech border and the Fulda Gap. I ended my active duty in 1987 and completed an additional 3 years of Inactive Ready Reserve.

In ending my military service I was a civilian police officer for the city of Eureka Illinois from 1987 to 1997. I finished my federal service and retired from the VA in December of 2021.
